RULES OF TENT PEGGING, 1986.
The Tent Pegging competition is one in which the combination of horse and rider with lance is tested on marked track with a prescribed speed to pick the peg with the lance. It is a test intended to demonstrate the horses freedom, energy, skill and obedience in galloping straight on the track when the rider is picking up the peg with the lance. It is also a test of the competitors horsemanship.
1. Runs:
The number of runs will be declared before the start of the competition.
2. Spears:
The spear used shall be under 2.44m. in length and the head shall not have a jaggered or serrated point or edge.
3. Pegs:
The pegs will be 3 cms. & 6 cms. wide, 2.5 cms. thick & 34 cms. long. They will be sunk in the ground to a depth of 17 cms., leaving 17 cms. clear above the ground. The width of the pegs may be reduced at the discretion of the Judges after the preliminary rounds.
4. Carry:

Scoring : If the peg is carried on the spear or carried in such a way that it falls beyond a line marked on the ground 15 metres from the point where the peg was fixed, 5 points will be scored.

Draw: If the peg is lifted clear out of the ground but drops within 15 metres from the point where the peg was fixed, 3 points will be scored.

Strike: If the peg is struck and bears the marks of the spear but is not lifted out of the ground, 1 point will be scored.
5. Dropped Spear:
In the event of a competitor dropping the spear during a run, he will be disqualified for that particular run, unless the spear drops after the 15 metres line when points will be scored as laid down in Rule 4.
6. Broken Spear:
In the event of a spear breaking during a run, the run will hold good and points will be scored as laid down in Rule 4.
7. Fall:
If the rider or the horse or both fall

within the 15 metres limit after the peg, the competitor will get no points for that run.

outside the 15 metres line, points will be scored as per Rule 4 above.
8. Speed:
800 meters per minute, Time allowed, 7.5 seconds per run.
9. Time Penalty:
Time taken beyond 7.5 seconds incurs .5 penalty for each commenced second.
10. Ties:
The Ties will be decided on
a. The largest number of pegs carried (5 points each).
b. The largest number of pegs lifted clear off the ground (3 points each).
c. The largest number of pegs touched (1 point each).
d. Additional run.
11. Decision of Judges: The decision of the Judges will be final.
Note:
No competitor may ride more than one horse in one event. In case the horse breaks down during the course of the competitions, no change of mount in permitted.
